Planet Urchin is a tiny world whose creatures multiplied until the land ran out.
Lying down takes up the space of three, so everyone works standing, eats standing, and sleeps standing.
The axolotl office worker is one of them.
At the bus stop one night, an old dog muttered:
"At the top of the planet, there is one place, they say, where you are allowed to lie down."
A thing called a bed.
Tonight, not home. All the way up.
VERTICAL WORLD is a wobbly balance game and climbing game starring a sleepy axolotl. Clear it, and a 3D platformer climb opens above. Cute, cozy, a little hard, made of soft clay, and fully playable offline.
■ HOW TO PLAY
- Walk with the left and right buttons
- You are sleepy and you wobble. Walk toward the way you are falling to steady yourself. The half-circle at the bottom of the screen shows your lean
- Crowds hold you up, because you can lean on the people around you. The gaps are what is dangerous
- Sleepiness builds over time. When the gauge is full, you fall asleep on your feet. Canned coffee and energy drinks wake you up a little
- Gusts of wind, and trains starting and braking, knock you off balance. When an arrow appears, brace yourself
- Fall over, and you start again from the bottom
■ CLIMB ANY BUILDING YOU LIKE
Choose your building from the ground: apartments, a station building, a housing block, a department store, a radio tower, an office block, a construction site, a hotel, a school, a hospital, a factory.
The buildings are linked by elevators, gondolas, a helicopter, a hot-air balloon, trolleys, a cable car, a Ferris wheel, a ropeway and more.
Forks, dead ends, ladders and stairs. And some rides you really should not get on.
■ TOOLS AND SOUVENIRS
An umbrella, balloons and energy drinks are tools you pick up and use on the way.
A tall body pillow, a cake and tall luggage are souvenirs. They make walking harder, but bring one all the way to the bed for a reward.
■ BEYOND THE BED
Reaching the bed brings the ending.
Then the world above opens. After a good sleep, you no longer wobble.
Now it is a 3D jump-and-run climb. Fall, and you fall all the way down.
Drift in the wind and choose your way up from three routes. You can plant one flag, and return to it whenever you fall.
The true ending waits at the very top.
■ A SOFT CLAY WORLD
A tall, squishy town made in soft, clay-like 3D.
Played in portrait. Japanese and English. Sound effects and music.
■ ADS AND PURCHASES
- Ads play only when you choose "Continue from here" after falling over (once per attempt). No ads interrupt your play
- The only in-app purchase is the Dress-Up Set (one-time purchase): axolotl colors, neckties, futon patterns and pillows. It changes looks only. It does not make you stronger
- Some dress-up items can also be unlocked by playing
- No account needed. Your records are saved only on your device
- Plays offline (an internet connection is needed only to watch an ad)
For the way home after a long day.
