The prayers that make up the Rosary are arranged in groups of ten Hail Marys, called decades. Each decade is preceded by a Lord's Prayer and followed by a Gloria Be. During the recitation of each series, the thought is given to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recalls the events in the life of Jesus and Mary. Five decades are recited by the rosary. Other prayers are sometimes added before or after each decade. Rosaries are a help to say these prayers in the right sequence.

The Rosary began on the short thread:

The sign of the cross on the Crucifix;
The prayer "O Lord, open my lips, O God, come to my help, Lord, hurry to help me", always on the Crucifix;
The Apostles' Creed, again on the Crucifix;
The Lord's Prayer at the first great heel (for the intentions of the pope and the needs of the Church);
The Hail Mary on each of the three successive pearls (for the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity); And
The Glory Be on the next big heel.
The prayer of the decades follows, repeating this cycle for each mystery:

Announce the mystery;
The Lord's Prayer on the Big Heel;
The Hail Mary on each of the ten adjacent beads;
The Glory Be in space before the next big bead; And
To conclude:

The Salve Regina;
The litany of Loreto;
Any further intentions; And
The sign of the cross

The Mysteries of the Rosary are meditations on the episodes of the life and death of Jesus from the Annunciation to the Ascension and beyond, known as the joyful (or joyful) mysteries, the painful mysteries and the glorious mysteries. Each of these Mysteries contemplates five different stages in the life of Christ.

Joyful mysteries
Painful mysteries
Glorious mysteries
Luminous mysteries

The 15 promises fall into the category of "private revelation", and as such they are a pious tradition, which a person is free to believe or disbelieve.

Whoever will serve me faithfully by reciting the Rosary will receive graces as a sign.
I promise my special protection and the greatest thanks to all who will recite the Rosary.
The Rosary will be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, reduce sin and defeat heresies.
It will make virtue and good works flourish; he will obtain God's abundant mercy for souls; he will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them up to the desire of eternal things. Oh, souls will sanctify themselves by this means.
The soul that is recommended to me with the recitation of the Rosary will not perish.
Whoever recites the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, will never be conquered and never overcome by misfortune. God will not chastise him in his righteousness, he will not perish through an inopportune death (unprepared for heaven). The sinner will convert. The righteous will grow in grace and become worthy of eternal life.
Anyone who has a true devotion to the Rosary will not die without the sacraments of the Church.
Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary will have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the fullness of his graces; at the time of death they will share in the merits of the saints in heaven.
I will deliver those who have been devoted to the Rosary from purgatory.
The faithful children of the Rosary will deserve a high degree of glory in heaven.
You will get everything you ask of me by reciting the Rosary.
