Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. It was established in the 18th century as a small fishing village. The town proliferated in the early 21st century into a cosmopolitan metropolis focusing on tourism and hospitality. Dubai is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. It has the second most five-star hotels globally and the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa.

The history of human settlement in the area now defined by the United Arab Emirates is rich and complex. It points to extensive trading links between the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia civilizations.

These include Dubai Fashion 2020, and Dubai Design District, expected to become a home to leading local and international designers. The AED 4 billion first phase of the project was completed in 2015.

Dubai's lure for tourists is based mainly on shopping and its possession of other ancient and modern attractions. As of 2018, Dubai is the fourth most-visited city based on the number of international visitors and the fastest growing, increasing by a 10.7% rate. Dubai has been called the "shopping capital of the Middle East." Dubai alone has more than 70 shopping centers, including the world's largest shopping center, Dubai Mall.
