About this app

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge over The Golden Gate Strait at the entrance to San Francisco Bay in California.

The Golden Gate Bridge is currently the seventh longest suspension bridge in the world. The length of the bridge is 2.73 km, the distance between the piers is 1.28 km, its height reaches 235 meters. There are six lanes for vehicular traffic. The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco with the northern regions of Marin County and the less sparsely populated Napa and Sonoma Valley.

The idea of building a bridge over the bay dates back to 1872. However, the drafts made in those years were not touched until the 1920s, when ferry capacities reached the limit. Construction of The Golden Gate Bridge took place from January 5, 1933, to May 27, 1937, under the direction of controversial chief engineer Josef B. Strauss. 11 workers lost their lives during the construction.

In the construction of The Golden Gate Bridge, the technical difficulties of the time were overcome, and many records were broken regarding the structure of the bridge. These are; highest pillar (227 m), longest (2,332 m), thickest rope (92 cm), and largest underwater foundations. These foundations had to be made in the powerful currents of the strait. Another surprising thing is that it was done at a time of widespread unemployment and hunger, and $35,000,000 was spent. The bridge weighs 887,000 tons in total. Six hundred thousand rivets, the last of which is solid gold, hold together the beams of towers and beams. The bridge remained the longest suspension bridge in the world until the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York in 1964.

The Golden Gate Bridge was opened to traffic on May 27, 1937, at twelve o'clock at noon, with a telegraph signal given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt from the White House. At the opening, the chain, not the ribbon, is traditionally cut.

One hundred thousand vehicles use the bridge daily, and this number increases by around 10% per year. The return to city cost is $2.50 per axle. Because The Golden Gate Bridge, unlike the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, is not made of stainless metal, it has been profitable for decades, despite the cost of maintaining it.

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon of the city of San Francisco and the entire San Francisco Bay Area, and for many, the US as well as the Statue of Liberty in New York.
