About this app

Goldfish is a freshwater creature of the Cyprinidae family. It is often kept as a pet in indoor aquariums and is one of the most popular aquarium fish. Goldfish released into the wild has become an invasive pest in parts of North America.

Native to East Asia, the goldfish is a relatively little member of the carp family. It was first selectively bred for color in imperial China over 1000 years ago and has since evolved into several different breeds. Goldfish varieties vary significantly in size, body shape, fin configuration, and color (various combinations of white, yellow, orange, red, brown, and black have been observed).

Selective domestic breeding of goldfish was firmly established by the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD). In 1162, the empress of the Song Dynasty requested that a pond be built to collect the red and gold varieties. Until this time, non-imperial people were strictly forbidden to keep goldfish of the imperial yellow gold variety. While yellow goldfish are genetically easier to breed, this is the predicted reason why there are more orange goldfish than yellow goldfish. The development of other colors was first observed in 1276.

In the 1620s, goldfish were highly regarded in Southern Europe for their metallic scales and became a symbol of good luck and fortune. It had become a custom for married men to give their wives a goldfish on their first anniversary to symbolize the prosperous years to come. As goldfish became more accessible, this tradition quickly became obsolete, losing their status. Goldfish were first brought to North America around 1850 and quickly became famous in the United States.
