About this app

The giant panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), is a large, endangered bear species of the bear family, with large patches of black in patches on its white pelt. In order to distinguish it from the small panda, it is also called the giant panda or the bamboo bear to draw attention to the fact that it only feeds on bamboo. China's giant panda is one of the most endangered animal species in the world.

Giant pandas have exceptional black and white fur. Adult pandas are about 1.5 m long. Male pandas can reach a weight of 115 kg. Female pandas are generally smaller than male pandas, occasionally going 100 kilograms. Giant pandas live in remote regions such as Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, and Tibet. While Chinese dragons are a historical symbol of China, giant pandas have been an unofficial national symbol of China since the second half of the 20th century.

A giant panda has an unusual claw, including a thumb and five fingers. This thumb is actually formed by alternating the sesamoid bone (the bone in anatomy formed when a bone is firmly embedded in a beam) and helps the panda eat bamboo comfortably. The giant panda has a tail about 25 cm long. Giant pandas live in captivity until they are 20-30 years old. Pandas are sacred animals according to ancient Chinese and Japanese civilizations.

Because pandas live in very high mountain areas, available areas are limited and cramped. In addition, the average temperatures of the regions they live in have also increased. The beginning of all this is the loss of timber from the bamboo harvest and the associated destruction of existing bamboo, which is the food of wild pandas. From 1973 to 1984, the community of wild pandas in 6 regions of Asia decreased by around 50%. Giant pandas have not lost the simple digestive properties of a carnivore, although they manage with the daily food of a herbivore. The giant panda's round face is formed by the adaptation of the giant panda to bamboo, its daily food. Giant pandas' powerful claw muscles attach from head to paw. The large molars serve to crush and grind fibrous plant parts.

Because research on pandas is challenging, little is known about them. These precious animals are under protection as they are near extinction, so it is not known for certain today whether they even hibernate. The World Wide Fund for Nature continues its efforts to prevent the extinction of pandas. Giant pandas have a special meaning for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), as this adorable animal has been the foundation's symbol since 1961.
