About this app

Tomato is an edible herbaceous plant from the nightshade family, native to South and Central America. The synonym of tomato is the word sledge.

The tomato plant, which has a height of 10 or 15 cm, has a slightly woody stem. There are 5-9 leaflets on the leaves, which are 10-25 cm long. Its leaves are hairy. Tomato flowers, 1–2 cm long and usually yellow, are 3-12 on a stalk. Its typically red, edible fruit is 1–2 cm in diameter in wild plants but larger in cultivated plants. Most vitamins are found in this fruit, and it has a cancer preventive structure. These vitamins and preventive minerals are located in the skin of the tomato.

In the USA, in 1893, the court classified it as a vegetable because it was stored and eaten with vegetables, but it is actually a fruit. Tomatoes have an exciting history. A wild yellow tomato variety was found in Bolivia and Peru, and then grown in Mexico, and shipped to Europe after Christopher Columbus' discovery of America. The Italians called it the golden apple because of its yellow color, but red varieties soon appeared. Tomatoes were first grown in the USA by Thomas Jefferson. But many people refused to eat it, believing it to be poisonous, until 1900. Long ago, it was the apple of love for many Europeans because it was thought to make people romantic. The name tomato comes from the Spanish tomate, which is also derived from the Nahuatl tomatotl.

According to 2012 data, 162 million tons of tomatoes were produced on an area of 57.2 million hectares in the world. Countries having the most tomatoes; 50 million tons of China, 17.5 million tons of India, 13.2 million tons of USA, 11.3 million tons of Turkey. While China alone produces 1/3 of world production, Turkey's share is 7%.
