About this app

A windmill is a machine with a large propeller wheel that uses the power of the wind to generate energy. Since time immemorial, windmills have been used to obtain mechanical power for tasks such as grinding wheat and pumping water. Windmills in the Netherlands are tasked with pumping water to separate the land from the sea. Although they are still an essential source of power in developing countries, their role in industrially produced nations has decreased. The first windmill used as a source of electrical energy was built in Denmark in 1890. After this date, windmills were used to supply electricity to tiny houses and farms.

The model and operation of the windmill depend on the wind speed, direction, and height. Places with an average wind speed of 29-40 km per hour are suitable for windmills. Light winds of 8 km/h cannot operate the windmill, while strong winds and storms can damage the windmill.

Windmills generally consist of some parts that rotate with the wind. There are two main types; horizontal axis and vertical axis windmills.

Windmills are known worldwide as an iconic symbol of Dutch culture. Some 1,200 historic windmills survive, most of which are gristmills or polder mills. Many remain fully functional, and their upkeep and operation are promoted by a number of civic organizations, including De Hollandsche Molen, Gilde van Vrijwillige Molenaars and Stichting De Fryske Mole. Several Dutch villages are known for their concentration of windmills, including Kinderdijk, Zaanse Schans, and Schiedam, home to the tallest windmill in the world. Tjaskers, a kind of windmill native to Friesland, were also used for water management.
