About this app

The Nevada COMPASS app is managed by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) and was developed to support students and families in alignment with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. The McKinney-Vento Act ensures that children and youth experiencing homelessness have equal access to free, appropriate public education, including the right to remain in their school of origin and receive transportation and support services.

The NDE oversees the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education program, which ensures that students experiencing homelessness receive the necessary support to access education and essential services. The NDE also oversees several offices and programs related to the effective implementation of educational programming for children and youth ranging from infants and toddlers to those ages 18 and beyond.

By connecting users with local resources—such as housing, school enrollment help, food, healthcare, and mental health support—this app helps remove barriers to education and promotes stability for students facing housing insecurity across Nevada.

The Nevada COMPASS mobile app was developed in partnership by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) and Student Achievement Division/Office of Student and School Supports (OSSS) with funding through the Office of Early Learning and Development (OELD) via the Preschool Development Grant, Birth-Five (PDG-B-5; Grant Number 90TP0099 awarded to the Nevada Department of Education, from the Office of Early Childhood Development, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). This initiative was led by and will be maintained by the McKinney-Vento Title VII, Part B Education for Children and Homeless Youth (ECHY) program office with Title IV-A funding from the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) of the U.S. Department of Education.
