The theme trails “Paths of Contraband” introduce the story of contraband to the visitors, telling them about the local history and guiding them through the exciting routes of the Nature Park Učka. Contraband or smuggling took part in the 1930s when the Italian authorities proclaimed the so called “zona franca”, i.e. duty-free zone in the Kvarner district. “Zona franca” included Rijeka, Opatija, Ičići, Lovran, Mošćenička Draga and Matulji. In this area, consumer goods were cheaper than in the surrounding areas, so smuggling goods from the duty-free zone became one of the ways to survive for the local inhabitants.
