About this app

Indonesia is a mega-biodiversity country with around 4,000 species of wood-producing trees, but only 1,044 species of wood have been traded. Each type of wood has a different name and characteristics, where the difference in these characteristics will determine the quality or proper use of each type of wood. The quality of wood influences the price and determination of appropriate Forest Product Fees so it is important to know the exact identity of each type of wood. Timber identification is the process of determining the type of wood based on the anatomical structure characteristics it has. Identification of species is needed not only to determine the use of wood in industry, but also to support bio-forensic analysis in handling legal cases where wood is used as evidence.
During this time it takes approximately two weeks to identify the species, considering 163 microscopic characteristics of wood based on IAWA (International Association of Wood Anatomists) guidelines that need to be examined. Currently, demand for timber identification continues to increase from various parties such as customs, law enforcement, and the timber industry. To answer this challenge, the P3HH Research Team initiated an automatic wood identification system research since 2011 in collaboration with various parties. In 2017-2018, P3HH cooperated with LIPI through the INSINAS collaboration program funded by the Ministry of Research and Technology, developing automatic wood identification. In its development, in 2019, the Forest Product Research and Development Center will develop AIKO-KLHK comprehensively as a form of implementing innovation.

AIKO-KLHK as an Android-based wood type identification tool uses macroscopic photos of wood cross sections. The use of AIKO-KLHK is done by downloading AIKO-KLHK for free on Playstore onto a smartphone. The identification of types of wood can be used by various groups. Identification of AIKO-KLHK wood species is done by taking a cross-section of wood on the smooth surface of intact wood. AIKO-KLHK will identify the type of wood from the smartphone digital photo and will recommend the type of wood based on a digital photo database of wood in the network (online). The process of identifying AIKO-KLHK wood species is done in seconds in the network (online).

Along with the changing times, AIKO-KLHK needs to continue to develop themselves, in order to anticipate the need for identification of types of wood in the future. AIKO-KLHK will integrate with the Xylarium Bogoriense wood collection, so that information can be more complete and more wood is identified in the database. In addition, the integration of AIKO-KLHK with the Xylarium Bogoriense database will increase the ability to identify wood species from various regions, so that in the future it can be used as a reference in data collection and mapping of wood species in Indonesia. The integration of the AIKO-KLHK wood identification system with Xylarium Bogoriense is also expected to provide data and information to determine the geographical origin of the tree and when the tree is cut down, including the chemical content and active ingredients of wood.

At present, AIKO-KLHK contains 823 types of Indonesian traded timber and protected species according to KLHK Regulation No. P.20 / MENLHK / SETJEN / KUM.1 / 6/2018, types of wood in CITES, certain types of wood as requested by the Customs based on the Decree of the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia No. 462 / KM.4 / 2018.

In addition to presenting the results of the identification of wood species including scientific names and trade names, strong classes, durable classes, classification / classification of trade logs, and recommendations for the use of wood, this application also provides information on conservation status based on applicable national and international regulations. AIKO-KLHK will continue to be developed, both in terms of the amount of wood, system updates, and the information presented.

Disappointed to discover, after installing the app, that one must belong to some sort of institution in order to register. Pretty irritating waste of time. Consider a notification in the description, huh?

Tried it with over 20 different pieces of wood that I already have and know the species to and not one time was it right. Couldn't even identify zebrawood or walnut which are very easy by eye. Horrible app
