About this app

Guardians of Champaran-"Champaran ke Prahari Purane Vriksh" is a unique initiative by East Champaran- District Administration to protect our elderly trees. Older trees, like Neem, Mango, Jamun,. Banyan, Pipal, Pakad etc are very common source of shelter and protection for all kind of species. They protect from soil errosion and floods. Moreover they act as Guardians for us with whom we identify ourselves. Some of these are Mother Trees which have felt generations into their lap. No doubt, these Guardian Trees need protection as they survive for next generations. It is said 1000 new plants serve same purpose as a big tree does.

At East Champaran aka Motihari district of Bihar, several initiatives have been done to give meaning and life to Guardian Trees. Under leadership of District Magistrate Shri Shirsat Kapil Ashok, IAS, who also championed this concept, a movement is carried on to protect older trees. Most importantly, it is the common mass who is associating themselves and inheriting older trees for protection. Both in field and on line activities have been done.

The fist step was identification of such trees. Through Paryawran Prahari app, so far 6000 trees have been identified which are as old as 100 years or more. The basic data like location, age of trees, girth, protection requirements are captured. Associated stories are if any, they are also scripted. Several trees have been found with a relevance to British Empire.

A local committee is constituted for each Guardian Tree, which are nearby households. These people take oaths to protect trees and inform authorities in case this tree is in danger.

Protection of trees is ensured through people participation in which they are encouraged to come forward to fill soil in the roots of trees and paint trunk with lime for insect protection. So far 600 trees have been protected in this way.

A unique signboard is attached to protected trees.

Routine activities which involve public participation at large are carried on. This includes Raksha Bandhan with trees,. Gode Bharai beneath trees, Dipotswa at Dipawali among others. Teachers and School Children are encouraged to arrange debates and conduct pathshalas under the trees canopy.

A unique fiture is on line adoption of trees. However it is not a legal adoption, one can adopt a tree and get an appreciation certificate. People can adopt a tree on their birthday, anniversary or other special occasions. For this a calendar is scheduled. The sole purpose is awareness towards protection of such trees
