Maharaj firstly appeared in Shegaon a place from Maharashtra which is in Vidarbh region in 18th century, on 23rd Feb i.e. according to Hindu calendar "Magh Krishna Saptami". He is also known as incarnation of Lord Shiva, Lord Dattatraya as well as Lord Ganesha. Devotee call him as Gajanan Maharaj because he is always used to chant the "Gan Gan Ganat bote". It has a greate meaning, first "Gan" means count, Individual soul, second "Gan" means a person or a devotee, who is similar as Brahma. And to suggest it the word "Ganat" is used. Bote is corrupt form of Bate, the overall meaning is "Individual soul is brahma himself". That is God is omnipresent. He used to do Ashtang Yoga using their meditative practice he can do various miracles so that devotees called him as Yogiraj. Maharaj Das Ganu Maharaj has written a 21 chapter biography, "Shri Gajanan Vijay Granth" of Gajanan Maharaj in Marathi. This book contains divine description of miracles of Gajanan Maharaj.
