About this app

Reconstruct a finished blade heat by heat. Heat Chain Billet records every individual heat a billet takes as an ordered, replayable chain attached to that piece of steel, so nothing about how it got to its current condition is left to memory.

Start πŸš€ a heat and tag it forging, normalising, hardening soak or temper. Read the colour-temperature scale to set your judged reading, stop the heat, then enter time ⏱️ at colour, hammer passes and fuel state β€” coal bed depth, or burner count and gas pressure. Two heats at the same colour stay distinguishable afterwards because the fuel state is recorded with each one. The capture screen is built for gloved, one-handed use at the forge.

The billet screen sums minutes above critical across the whole chain and converts that total πŸ’― into an estimated decarb depth, so you know πŸ’‘ how much stock to grind away before you start πŸš€ grinding. The chain is scrubbable heat by heat, with the photograph taken at each heat sitting alongside it β€” the camera πŸ“· opens the moment you stop a heat, binding shape and scale to that exact point in the sequence.

Close a billet with a real outcome: warp direction and amount, crack at quench, file-skate result. Each outcome is attributed back to the specific heats that preceded it, not to the project as a whole. The attribution plot then places that billet against your own past work in the same alloy β€” cracked versus sound, against soak time ⏱️ and quench temperature β€” so the record is worth more after fifty billets than after one.

A stock ledger tracks your bars by alloy and dimension with remaining length and the offcuts every cut generates. Forge sessions ⏱️ group the day's heats with forge type ⌨️ and ambient conditions. Shipped alloy profiles for common smith steels carry critical, normalising, soak and temper ranges, alongside a colour scale calibrated for shop lighting, and your billet's chain is measured against them.

Everything works offline πŸ“΄. There is no account, no sign-in and no sync β€” the alloy and colour reference data ships inside the app πŸ“±, photos πŸ“Έ stay in local storage on your device, and every flow completes in airplane mode. The app records what you did; it never tells you what to do.

Cut a billet, start πŸš€ the first heat, and let the chain build πŸ”¨.
Log πŸ“ every forge heat on a billet and track your time ⏱️ above critical.
