1. First, register as a member! There are no monthly fees for membership registration. It takes as little as 1 minute!
You can register an account using your email address or Yahoo! JAPAN ID.
2. Find a HELLO CYCLING station nationwide.
After free membership registration, launch the app, find a nearby station in your desired area, and reserve a bicycle.
3. Head to the station and unlock the bicycle.
Confirm the "vehicle number" you reserved on the app, and press the button on the app to unlock the bicycle and begin your rental.
4. Enjoy a comfortable ride to your destination with our electric-assist bicycles!
Available from 160 yen/30 minutes.
(Depending on the region, there may be a mix of bicycles with different hourly rates. Please check the bicycle usage fees in the app.)
5. Return the bicycle at a nearby station.
Return the bicycle to the station you wish to return it to, and manually lock it.
Press the "RETURN" button on the bicycle key to complete the return!

Ratings and reviews

Not foreigner friendly. It seems to block me when I try to use a global eSim, but it works on WiFi (which is obviously not useful). Only a limited number of foreign countries phone numbers are supported. I used to use it with my friend who lives here, but now they also stopped allowing multiple bikes to be hired. It's a shame because it could probably be as good as bike schemes in other countries otherwise.

It does not accept phone numbers from my country in Western Europe, so I can't sign up for the service. On the Hello Cycling website, in the tutorials on how to sign up, my country is listed but not in the app. Terrible. Wouldn't it be better if they accepted numbers from all over the world or simply used email addresses as the primary account identifier? Update June 2026: nothing change. Registration is limited to phone numbers from handful of countries and mine is not on the list.

Well, it kept getting stuck. It's frustrating when you are next to the bike and ready to go but the app kept acting up. Took more than 30 minutes of reinstalling and cursing. Right I was using an international roaming plan and things worked except this app. I needed to bike 10 miles to Wasabi Farm from Matsumoto, only to find out that Japanese roads are broken and narrow as hell all the way and the city sidewalks are tight as a**hole. Riding a bike takes a Kamakazi dedication and crazy as a fk.
