About this app

Joplin is a secure, open source note taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. The notes are searchable, can be copied, tagged and modified. The Android application supports markdown rendering.

The note can be securely synchronised using Joplin Cloud so that your notes are available on all your devices. It also lets you publish notes, and collaborate on notebooks with your friends, family or colleagues. Synchronisation is secured using end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

Besides Joplin Cloud, the notes can be synchronised with your other services, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, S3 or WebDAV. Joplin is also available for Windows, macOS and Linux and all can synchronise with each others so your notes can be available on your mobile phone, computer, tablet, etc. Please see the official website for the list of available applications: https://joplinapp.org/

The desktop applications can be used to import notes from Evenote via .enex files, including the formatted content (which is converted to markdown), resources (images, attachments, etc.) and complete metadata (geolocation, updated time, created time, etc.). These imported notes can then be synchronised with the Android app.

You can't turn off the phone or switch to another app when syncing; you have to "babysit" the sync. In the latest version, they upgraded encryption, but there was no notice that it was a breaking change, so for a while I had a desktop app couldn't read notes the mobile app writes. If the sync was fixed this would be a decent app. I can live with the other occasional headaches, but only since it's an open source app.

(update: 2023/7/15) Now, I feel Joplin is not for me. Because it is very slow, weird in sync and uncomfortable. So, I'm trying to get out of it. --- I am using Linux and Android apps. Joplin is very useful, and stable. And for me, it is a very very good alternative to Evernote. For Android app, I am looking forward to formatting buttons/menu like in desktop apps. And, scroll to the top/bottom features would be very useful.

Best notes app, ever! I love Joplin. I was looking for an encrypted replacement for Microsoft OneNote that worked with my NextCloud, and didn't have any of the baggage that comes with Microsoft products. After trying a few different products, I settled on Joplin because of its ease of use, built in encryption, and seamless integration with NextCloud. I recommend Joplin to anyone looking for robust notes platform.
