cur-calc converts amounts between 154 currencies. The figures are central bank reference rates. After the first fetch they sit on the device, and the app keeps calculating with them when there is no connection.
THE CONVERTER
• A number pad of its own instead of the system keyboard. The amount stays in view while you type, and holding the delete key clears digit by digit.
• Source and target currency sit as two cards above each other. The button between them swaps the direction.
• The currency picker has a search field for code and name. Typing “krone” finds SEK, NOK, DKK, CZK and ISK.
• Below the result the rate is written out in both directions.
THE CURRENCY LIST
• Your amount appears in every other currency at the same time.
• The star pins currencies to the top, in the order you marked them.
• Tapping a row takes that currency into the converter as the target.
• The search field filters by code and name as in the converter.
THE WIDGET
A home screen widget shows the currency pair you last used, with its rate and date; one tap opens the app. While a widget sits on your home screen, cur-calc fetches the rates twice a day in the background, only with a network connection. Without a widget nothing happens in the background.
WHERE THE RATES COME FROM
Central bank reference rates, obtained through the Frankfurter service. The source publishes once a day. The date of the rate set on screen sits above the converter and above the list; tapping it opens the origin, the scope and a button for an immediate fetch. If a fetch fails, the last set stays in use and its date stays visible. A rate set ships with the app, so the very first start is not empty.
SETTINGS
• German and English, independent of the system language
• Light and dark design, or whatever the system says
• Amounts in the notation of the selected language
• Data status with a fetch button, privacy in brief, and the changes in this version
• “Send feedback” opens an e-mail to the developer
LARGE TEXT AND LANDSCAPE
The number pad stays usable at every system font size: it reports how much room it needs, and the area above it becomes scrollable when space runs short. In landscape the cards sit on the left and the pad on the right.
PRIVACY
cur-calc collects no data and shows no ads. There is no user account and no tracker. The network is used for a single purpose: fetching rates from api.frankfurter.dev, when you open the app and – with a widget – in the background. Your IP address reaches that service because no answer could come back without it; the request itself carries neither an amount nor your currency selection nor an identifier. Favourites, currency pair, language and appearance stay on the device.
Note: reference rates are mid-market rates. Bureaux de change, banks and card issuers apply their own margins, so the amount at the counter will differ.
cur-calc belongs to the LT.Apps family, like fin-calc (financial calculators), pet-calc (pet costs) and fam-calc (child support): ad-free, no tracking, no subscription.
