About this app

The Romanian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora has had, in addition to its pastoral mission, a role of ambassador of national identity, constantly fighting for the preservation of spiritual and cultural values.

The application "Bonn-Orthodox Parish Holzhirche am Rhein" aims primarily to facilitate communication between the parish and its faithful, as a means of permanent information of the Liturgical Program, cultural or other events. It is also a mediator in order to increase the spiritual life of all those who through a certain context do not have access to other sources of information, by presenting many theological materials with an explanatory character.

On the other hand, the application aims to meet the many requests from tourists and pilgrims, regardless of their nationality and denomination, to present everything that means Orthodoxy, Orthodox Church, Wooden Church of Bonn, Painting of the wooden church, Romanian Community ... and many other topics of interest, as a result the application is bilingual.

Overview / historical context:

Romanian Orthodox Parish ”Saints Mc. Ștefan, Cassius and Florentius ”Bonn was founded in 2009, the dream of the faithful being from the very beginning to build its own wooden church, in Maramures style. Thus, following several requests, only in 2016 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ceded for a period of 99 years a plot of 600m2, on which the place of worship was later built. The Romanian government had bought in the 1980s a plot of land of approximately 10000m2 in the city of Bonn, on which the building of the former Romanian Embassy was later built, currently serving as a location for the Consulate General of Romania in Bonn. The consular district comprises several Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (Nordrhein-Westfalen; Rheinland-Pfalz; Hessen, Saarland). Therefore, there are dozens, sometimes hundreds of requests for consular services in Bonn every day. Located on the banks of the Rhine, right in the immediate vicinity of the consulate, the Wooden Church offers the chance for a moment of peace and prayer to all Romanians who transit the area for their bureaucratic needs.

From an architectural and cultural point of view, the wooden church is highly appreciated by many residents of Bonn, respectively by tourists who either organize short boat trips on the river Rhine, located just a few meters away from the church, or enjoy for a walk on the Rhine Promenade.

The wooden church has been officially added to the Tourist Map of Bonn, as a result it is also the host of many group visits.
