About this app

The Mountain Ranger Map is a platform that centralizes dynamic information about mountainous areas, aiming to improve hiker safety. Everyone who traverses a mountain trail is each other's best mountain ranger. Through real-time reporting and information sharing, it allows every hiker preparing for an ascent to be better prepared, minimizing the risks of each climb.

The Mountain Ranger Map can import GPX/KML track files and plot them on the map. It displays routes and data by segmenting the track content, allowing users to focus on the current route and observe whether they are on the planned route, reducing the possibility of getting lost. Users can also record their routes, documenting each trip.

Offline Map: The Mountain Ranger Map itself includes OSM Taiwan map data, contour maps, DEM, and other multi-layer vector data, with a unique design style. Map data can be updated in the map settings, and the system will download the new layers, saving time and data.

Online Map: The application provides various satellite maps and historical maps, allowing interactive observation of terrain features and historical evolution.

Offline Search: The app itself has tens of thousands of location records built-in, including water sources, campsites, trail conditions, communication points, mountains, and bases. You can still search for location data even without internet access on the mountain, and the map settings can be updated with the latest information at any time.

Tracking Footprints: Before setting off, create your itinerary by filling in your starting and estimated descent times, choosing an in-system route or importing your own track. The system will generate an invitation code. Give the code to a family member or someone staying behind; they can open it in a browser to see the planned route and your check-in locations without registration or installation. Once on the trail, check in at campsites, huts, and peaks. The app will also proactively remind you as you approach these locations. Check-ins taken when there is no signal are saved on your phone and uploaded as soon as you have internet access. Return to the trailhead and press "I'm going downhill" to end the trip. The person staying behind will see a neutral status like "Moving - Last report 3 hours ago". The ranger map will not send out distress signals for you, nor will it automatically notify anyone if you haven't checked in for a long time. Judgment and contact are determined by humans, therefore we do not store the contact information of those remaining on duty.

**Location Reporting:** Upon arriving at a campsite, hut, or water source, you can report the water source status via the app. If you encounter landslides, official road closures, or hornet infestations, you can also report the situation to hikers about to ascend the mountain. Reporting can be done even offline; the app will automatically upload the report data when you have internet access.

**Rainfall and Catchment Estimation:** The information cards for water sources, huts, and campsites are connected to real-time data from the Central Weather Bureau's automatic rain gauges. Of the more than 1,300 stations across Taiwan, 252 are located at altitudes above 700 meters. The card shows the distance to the nearest station, hourly rainfall profiles, and the accumulated rainfall over the past few days. The app calculates the approximate water volume collected during a given period based on the roof's horizontal projection area and the water tank's capacity. For water sources and campsites, it calculates "how many liters could be collected if a catchment area of 2 to 20 square meters were set up." Water sources also provide estimated rainfall. The median last report from all 241 water sources at the site was 130 days ago, with one-third exceeding a year; seeing "Water Volume: Moderate" likely refers to data from four months ago. The app displays hiker reports and rainfall estimates side-by-side on the same scale, making the difference readily apparent and allowing you to decide whether to carry an extra liter.

Record Tracks: Record the track for each trip and calculate ascent, descent, and distance in real time. After the trip, you can merge or export multiple track records in "My Tracks." You can choose to export in GPX or KML format.

**Mark Locations**
When recording a track, in addition to receiving location reports, you can also mark your recorded track. You can delete marks if you accidentally enter them incorrectly, or select which marks to include in the exported track.

**Import Tracks**
Before setting off, you can import downloaded tracks into the application to observe or follow the route.

**Waypoint Cards** Map markers will appear with reminder cards indicating the straight-line distance and direction of each point.

**Title Notifications** When you are 200 meters away from a campsite, water source, or an area with terrain features, you will be alerted.

**Derailment Alerts** If you deviate from the recorded route, the map will issue an alert. You can set the distance to be deviated from the route before issuing an alert.

**Share Tracks**
You can share your edited track records with others.

Location Updates
View the latest location information reported by fellow hikers in the notification interface.

Quick Location Sharing
Send your current location and coordinates with one click, letting others know your location in emergencies.

Routes
The Ranger Map provides information on well-known traditional routes, route data analysis, suggested times, weather forecasts, and allows direct loading of tracks.

Login is available using Google/Line/Apple accounts. The application only stores avatars, names, and email addresses to link user reporting records. The Ranger Map does not store sensitive data, nor does it provide this information to these third-party platforms. If an account is deleted, the username for past reports will be changed to "Anonymous." Every report is recorded in "My Reports," and each report accumulates a credit score. When the credit score is high enough, each new location will be automatically approved.

Usage Scenarios

Leave your itinerary to your family—Those left behind can see where you are.

A-Zhe created a three-day itinerary before departure and sent the invitation code to his wife. The next day, he checked in at Tianchi Mountain Villa. His wife opened the link at home and saw that he had reported back on the planned route two hours earlier. On the day he descended the mountain, he clicked "I'm down the mountain," and the tracking automatically ended, putting his family at ease.

Checking water sources before departure—Report from four months ago.

Xiao-Mei's route only had one water source, the card said "Water Volume: Normal," and marked 128 days ago. The rainfall estimate showed "Sparse," with only 2 mm in the last three days. She brought an extra 1.5 liters, and indeed, only a trickle remained.

The night before departure—Pre-departure confirmation.

Xiao-Mei is going to Qilai tomorrow. She opened the route page, saw the elevation profile, estimated arrival time, and tomorrow's weather, and casually checked the water sources along the route: "Currently, water levels are average, drinkable." Feeling reassured, she slept soundly that night.

No signal on the ridgeline—offline work still possible
A-Zhe walked along the main ridge where there was no signal, but the map still displayed his location, contour lines, and mountain shadows as usual. A hiker ahead had reported a "landslide, requiring a high detour" three days prior, so he changed to an alternative route early, avoiding the dangerous section.

Reaching the water point—instant reporting
Old Wang discovered that the previously marked water source had dried up. He sent an offline update, "Dried Up," which was automatically uploaded after reconnecting to a signal—ensuring the following groups wouldn't have to detour unnecessarily.

Trail running training—track recording
A-Kai switched to "Trail Running" mode (high-precision sampling), and after the run, viewed the movement time, elevation gain, pace analysis, and saved the track.

When an emergency occurs – send out the location. If a teammate sprains their ankle and cannot walk, the team leader can use "share location" to send the precise coordinates to the person staying behind, allowing for direct location of the rescue.
Be each other's mountain patrolmen: on the way up the mountain, there are people coming down to light your way.
