Maestro del Corazón helps family doctors, physicians and students hone their auscultation skills.
The Heart Master game was developed with the support of Dutch doctors Dr. R. van den Brink (UMC Amsterdam) and Dr. J. Wittekoek (Heartlife Clinics) and with the collaboration of Dr. Yassir Javaid, general practitioner and Cardiovascular Head of Primary Care for the UK East Midlands Strategic Clinical Network. In addition, the clinical protocols and educational content were validated through collaboration with Dr. Angel Sánchez Recalde, cardiologist at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital). The game has been funded by Edwards Lifesciences.
The user is in a virtual consultation as a primary care physician with the aim of improving the quality of life of patients with typical symptoms of valvular heart disease by increasing their "satisfaction index". Through the game, GPs will have to:
1. Evaluate the patient's medical history and ask appropriate questions about his symptoms.
2. Perform a physical examination and auscultation: perform all necessary tests to detect the cause of the symptoms, including cardiac auscultation with recognition of the typical heart sounds of patients with heart valve disease.
3. Make a diagnosis based on the medical history and the results of the physical examination
4. Make a provisional diagnosis and determine the appropriate referral pathway
To support learning, the cardiologist 'avatar' provides diagnostic feedback to players and explains the symptoms and signs of heart valve disease in more detail. The additional learning parts are theoretical pieces of information based on current guidelines for GPs and cardiologists in the UK.
Education through gamification allows aspiring GPs and GPs to use this as an effective learning tool.
