About this app

The Experience Lab Data Collector is a specialized scientific application developed by the Experience Lab at Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas). This application is designed exclusively to facilitate high-precision data collection for academic research in the fields of tourism, leisure, and mobility.

Our tool captures high-frequency trajectories and motion data to help researchers understand how people move through and experience complex environments, such as urban spaces, transport hubs, and leisure attractions.

Key Research Features:
• High-Fidelity GPS: Captures 1Hz coordinate data for precise path visualization.
• Motion Analysis: Samples 3-axis accelerometer data at 100Hz to analyze movement intensity and gait patterns.
• Proximity Detection: Supports Bluetooth Estimote scanning for indoor proximity research and point-of-interest interactions.
• Geofencing Logic: Integrated zone tracking to trigger specific research actions based on spatial boundaries.

Background Location Requirement:
To ensure the scientific integrity of our datasets, this application requires "Allow all the time" location access. Research sessions typically span multi-hour periods; background access allows the app to maintain a continuous, uninterrupted data stream even when the device is placed in a pocket or when the screen is turned off. This prevents data gaps that would otherwise render the research findings invalid.

Privacy and Data Security (GDPR):
We prioritize participant privacy and adhere strictly to GDPR guidelines and the BUas Research Ethics framework:
• Pseudonymization: No personal accounts, names, or emails are required. All data is collected under a unique alphanumeric Participant Code.
• Secure Transmission: Data is transmitted via encrypted HTTPS to a private, secure BUas server.
• Active Control: Data collection is only active when the user explicitly taps "Start."
• Silent Idle Mode: When no session is active, the app removes all location and geofence requests from the operating system to ensure zero background battery consumption and total privacy.

Usage Information:
This application is intended for participants enrolled in authorized research projects conducted by Breda University of Applied Sciences. Users should only install this app if they are participating in an official Experience Lab study.
