About this app

OefenKompas is a Dutch practice app for primary school, from Group 1 to Group 8. Every day, your child practices reading, language, spelling, and arithmetic briefly, using exercises that align with what has already been covered at school. As a parent, you set what is practiced and for how long, and then see in plain language how it went.

You create a profile with a first name or nickname, an avatar, a color, and the group. Next, you indicate what has already been covered at school: which letters in Group 3, which spelling topics and multiplication tables in Groups 4 and 5, and up to which numbers your child counts for each group. OefenKompas only uses what you activate and does not run ahead of the class. Your child starts with a few short exercises so that OefenKompas gets an initial impression. There is no test and no grade is given.

Every day, a new practice session of approximately five to twelve minutes is ready, depending on the group. You choose the practice days and the maximum practice time; once that is over, OefenKompas stops automatically. What goes well recurs less frequently. What is difficult recurs more often and in smaller steps. There is no countdown clock. If an assignment is too difficult, a help button assists by demonstrating the question or making it a step smaller.

In groups 1 and 2, every assignment is read aloud, and your child answers by tapping; reading is not required yet. The focus is on listening, vocabulary, rhyming, sounds, counting to 5 and later to 20, colors, shapes, and patterns. From group 3 onwards, reading, spelling, and arithmetic are added, with more text and larger numbers per group: from arithmetic up to 20 in group 3, via written calculations, fractions, and decimal numbers in group 6, to percentages, ratios, and calculations up to a million in groups 7 and 8. Group 8 adds long division, sentence parts, and text analysis, and progresses with the year: first to the transition test, then to the first year of secondary school. The exercises follow the core objectives that have been in effect since August 2026. In the parent overview, you can see what is going well, what your child is working on, and what could use extra attention. Without grades or comparisons with other children. You receive a short summary via email every week. Your child earns stars while practicing; you choose what they are saving for. There are no virtual coins, and your child cannot buy or unlock anything in the app. Every child has their own profile, and progress is saved when moving to the next group.

The app opens directly on the child's screen: your child chooses their own card and starts immediately, without having to log in again. You log in once using a login code sent via email. In groups 1 through 3, every assignment has Dutch audio; above that, most have a read-aloud button. You can enable larger letters, more line spacing, and a reading ruler for each child. Internet access is required for practice; if the connection is lost, the answers are saved and sent later.

Privacy comes first: no advertisements, no third-party trackers, and no data sales. For a child profile, we only ask for a first name or nickname and the group; no date of birth, school name, or photo. Profiles are not public, and your child cannot chat, not even with artificial intelligence. All exercises are checked by a human beforehand. Data is stored on servers in the European Union, and you can delete it yourself.

The first 14 days are a free trial period. If you do nothing after that, it stops automatically, and nothing will be debited. If you wish to continue, you take out one subscription per family: €4.99 per month or €49.90 per year for one child; for two, three, or four children, €8.99, €12.99, or €16.99 per month, or €89.90, €129.00, or €169.00 per year. The annual subscription continues; you will receive an email before we renew. You cancel yourself, without a notice period, via your account or via the store where you purchased the subscription. Your child continues practicing until the end of the paid period; progress is saved until you delete the profile yourself.
