FreeSpeech Messenger – Private Messaging
Your conversations. Your privacy. Your freedom.
FreeSpeech is a free, open-source messaging app designed to give you more control over your conversations. Chat privately, create groups and share photos, videos and documents, without relying on a single company to run the entire network.
PRIVATE MESSAGING
Your messages are encrypted directly on your device before they are sent. Only the devices involved in a conversation can read them. The servers relay your messages without being able to decrypt their contents.
No advertising. No tracking. No phone number or email address required.
YOUR IDENTITY, YOUR CONTROL
Create your identity directly on your device using three phrases. There is no traditional account to register and no personal phone number to share.
Add contacts by scanning a QR code or using a one-time contact card. Verify each contact with a security number to help ensure you are communicating with the right person.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO CHAT
• Private conversations with encrypted messages
• Group chats for friends, family, teams and communities
• Share photos, videos and documents directly in conversations
• Reply to messages, react to them, edit or delete them
• Typing indicators and read receipts that you can turn off
• Resume interrupted file transfers
• Light and dark themes
GROUPS THAT BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER
Create spaces for the people who matter to you. Groups support invitations, administration and moderation roles, helping communities and teams manage their conversations.
YOUR FILES AND YOUR DEVICES
Create encrypted backups and keep a recovery key so you can restore your identity and data. Use the same identity across multiple devices and keep your conversations accessible on your own devices.
Protect your phone with a PIN, remotely wipe a lost device and migrate to a new identity when needed.
A NETWORK WITHOUT A SINGLE POINT OF CONTROL
FreeSpeech is built around interconnected servers rather than one central service controlled by a single company. Independent administrators can operate public relays or private infrastructure for their families, associations and organisations.
Your contacts do not all need to use the same server. Multiple relays can connect to one another, helping build a more independent and distributed messaging network.
FREE AND OPEN SOURCE
FreeSpeech is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Its source code and protocol are publicly available. You can use the app for free, explore how it works and contribute to the project.
The Android app is available now, with Windows and Linux versions also available.
Take back control of your conversations with FreeSpeech Messenger.
