About this app

Welcome back to the era of old home computers when chip music was popular and apps had their name and version included in the title bar.

SidAMP is a music player which supports the SID format known from the Commodore 64/128 home computers.

It uses the High Voltage SID Collection as the main data resource. This means when the app is started for the first time a download of approx. 90mb is required for the complete archive and additional 500mb storage space is required for unpacking. Please don't delete or modify any of the text files from the archive; they are used constantly by the app.

Main features:
* simple, small and intuitive
* PETSCII user interface
* high quality playback
* SID 6581/8580 emulation
* HVSC integration
* Playlists

SID emulation:
From the main menu you can choose between SID chips or use the auto detect function. Please note that 8580 emulation should be used in combination with Digi Boost which can be toggled from the player screen.

Playlists:
This feature is still under development. Currently one default playlist is used. Playlist options are placed in the main menu; you can add/remove songs (song must be loaded) or import a playlist from previous versions of SidAMP.

Uses permissions:
* INTERNET ACCESS for downloading HVSC music collections
* POST NOTIFICATIONS for showing player controls in the status bar
* READ EXTERNAL STORAGE for loading music from expansion cards (optional)
* RECORD AUDIO for audio output visualisation (optional)

Great aesthetic, excellent sound reproduction. Didn't use the full screen on my Moto One Action. I kept tapping the wrong thing due to tiny touch domains. I didn't know what I had tapped because there is no visual feedback. Back navigation changes. Text in lists is often cut off with no clear way to see what is truncated. Requires a lot of scrolling with on screen scroll bar, doesn't allow swiping. Better scaling, more intuitive text display & swipable lists would earn 5 stars.

Sounds great! Nostalgic UI :-) Version 1.3.0 search works great and uses system keyboard (a problem with previous version, thank you responsive developer!). Easiest way to get HSVC downloaded. I wish it was possible to point at my directory of SIDs rather than requiring HSVC download in-app. Not super keen on scrolling of song name (wish there was a way in-app to get a detail view, power on screen and swipe down menu works well as a workaround :-)).

Hello Chris. Thanks for the review. In the latest version (1.3.0) the UI has been completely reworked and navigating is now much smoother. The search function also works now only with the system keyboard. By exiting the app (by clicking twice on the back button), the player service is clean up, and nothing stays in the background. Cheers!

Keyboard & interface are made half-useless by trying to keep a big PETSCII look. Search fails to find known SIDs. Needs practical GUI, not a kitchsy GUI that wastes screen space. Filenames/paths are not fully visible due to oversized PETSCII style interface, even in landscape orientation. Thus, navigation is nigh impossible. Function should always trump cutesie. DeepSID is the new standard for making SIDs accessible. Android programmers need to use DeepSID as inspiration. Sound is fine in SidAmp
