RAIN RFID OS Integration — Reference App
This app is a reference implementation for showing how RAIN RFID can fit natively into the Android operating system. It demonstrates how Android devices can discover, decode, and interact with RAIN RFID tags through a standardized, hardware-agnostic API — without requiring app developers to handle manufacturer-specific reader SDKs directly.
WHAT THIS APP DOES
• Discovers RAIN RFID tags in real time
• Automatically interprets raw tag memory into structured, human-readable data (e.g. GS1 SGTIN-96, ISO Supply Chain encodings)
• Lets you filter discovery by tag encoding type rather than raw data
• Shows how tag discovery and state changes can be handled at the OS level via Android's Intent system
WHO THIS IS FOR
This build is intended for internal testers and developers evaluating the RAIN RFID Android integration effort - not yet for general public use. It's a reference/demo application, not a production retail or inventory product.
BACKGROUND
RAIN RFID adoption today is fragmented across incompatible, hardware-specific APIs and inconsistently encoded tags. This project is part of an effort (RAIN Alliance SG15) to standardize how RAIN RFID hardware integrates with Android, so that any compliant reader works consistently across apps and devices.
This is a reference implementation and testing build. Functionality and UI are subject to change as the underlying API evolves.
