The Making Sense Community is a dedicated place for curious minds to trade ideas, sharpen their thinking, follow good arguments wherever they lead, and have fun doing it.

This is not another social network. Members use their full, real names, and we do not optimize for engagement, outrage, or any of the other mechanisms that have made the existing platforms so poisonous. This is a community in a more traditional sense—one that is organized around shared interests and the working assumption that the people you are talking with are arguing in good faith.

Topics consist of current events, politics, books, spirituality, health, film, travel, as well as episodes of the Making Sense podcast and whatever else is on your mind.

The most important house rules are intellectual honesty and basic decency. Keep it civil, don’t spam or self-promote, steelman before you criticize, and don’t use AI as a replacement for your own voice. Within that, this is meant to be a genuinely good time.

Inside, you'll find:

• Sam showing up how he would in a chat with people he trusts: dropping links he’s come across, reacting to events in the news, floating ideas that aren't yet ready for an episode of the podcast.
• Member-created threads on wide-ranging topics.
• Member profiles and direct messaging, so the connections you make here don't have to stay inside a single thread.
• Notifications you control, so the community is available when you want it and quiet when you don't.
• Healthy moderation that protects the space for the community by removing anyone engaging in toxic behavior.

Sam Harris has consistently been a voice for sanity and reason in these particularly weird times. The community feels like a point of rationality in an increasingly irrational time. The Making Sense Community app is a place for fans of the podcast and rational discussion. In the month or two it's existed, the discussions have been lively and not at all an echo chamber. The app works well, and feels like a social media for thinking people. Can't get much better than that these days.
