The MaMA App "Uhifadhi na Jamii" is a mobile tool designed to empower local communities in Zanzibar to monitor and protect mangrove forests through accessible technology and community participation. Featuring a user-friendly interface in Swahili with clear icons, it allows users of all literacy levels to document and report forest-related observations easily.
The app focuses on three main categories: activities, resources, and security. Activities refer to human practices impacting the mangroves, such as tree cutting or fishing. Resources cover observations of plants, animals, and overall biodiversity important for ecosystem health. Security includes reports related to safety concerns or threats faced by community members during monitoring.
Users submit reports with GPS locations and photos, capturing detailed and structured information. Offline functionality allows continuous monitoring even without internet access, syncing automatically later. This combination of technology and local knowledge strengthens community stewardship and sustainable mangrove management in Zanzibar.
The design emerged through participatory workshops with community members, ensuring the app reflects local needs, languages, and cultural sensitivities. It incorporates gallery support for photos and notes, minimizing input complexity with minimal steps for recording data. Results can be visualised locally to foster immediate community engagement and understanding.
