The "Wujek" mine in Katowice witnessed a bloody clash between striking miners and the militia defending the communist regime in 1981. It was a critical moment of martial law in Poland.
The memory of these events is cultivated by the Silesian Center for Freedom and Solidarity, which runs a memorial room at the site of the tragedy.
