Found a feather and want to know what bird it belongs to? "Bird Feathers" is a free atlas and identification guide that will help you accurately identify 225 Russian bird species by feather.

🪶 WHAT THE APP DOES

Identification Guide - Search for feathers by color group (striped, black, rufous, metallic, etc.) and find similar species with photos.
Bird Catalogue of Russia - Browse species, study feather photos, and descriptions in a convenient structure.
Habitat icons - tell you where feathers of a species are most likely to be found: forest, steppe, field, wetland, or urban areas.
Sex (♂/♀) and age (ad./juv.) markers - for species with distinct plumage differences.
A guide to feather structure—the rachis, quill, vane, flight feathers, tail feathers, and coverts—will help you understand the terminology of ptilology.
Marking species at risk of dying on power lines is useful for conservation work and environmental monitoring.

🔬 SCIENTIFIC BASIS

This app was developed by the Laboratory for the Study of Bird Feathers at the I.A. Goncharov Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local History—one of the few scientific institutions in Russia systematically studying ptilology. It is based on the museum's unique collection of bird feathers, collected over 10+ years in various regions of the country, as well as the experience of Russia's first "Atlas and Guide to Bird Feathers" (2016) and the new guidebook "Bird Feathers" (Fomina, Efremova, 2026). The taxonomy and species names are based on E.A. Koblik (2026).
