Re-read the poem again (so Gogol described the genre of his work) - it's the story of this "business in Russian," the first half of the 19th century.
The story about the adventures Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov was conceived as a three-volume work of Nikolai Gogol. Judging from the scraps of information, which have reached us, the author wanted to show in his poem the whole diversity of Russian life. The plot of the poem was suggested by Gogol, AS Pushkin (as the plot of "The Inspector").
Unfortunately, the work had remained unfinished. In print only the first volume, the second volume of the manuscript was burnt by the author, and the third volume was only in rough outline.
