The dictionary app reflects the content of the Swedish dictionary published by the Swedish Academy, which was published in printed format in 2009. The dictionary is a detailed description of the general vocabulary in modern Swedish. The emphasis is on the meaning and use of the words in combination with historical information.
The app is based on the lexical database prepared and further developed at the Department of Swedish Language, University of Gothenburg. It contains, among other things:
• 65,000 search terms with detailed meaning descriptions
• 100,000 linguistic examples and 5,000 idioms
• pronunciation information and learned pronunciation
• information on word class and inflection, syllables and word formation
• information about the style and usage of words
• special construction tasks
• dating of more than 70,000 words and meanings (from before the 11th century to the 21st century)
• etymologies for around 28,000 words and meanings
• well-known quotes in connection with individual articles
• style boxes, i.e. comments about correctness of language.
In the app, you can search on the basic forms of words and on a large number of inflected forms. Thanks to a spelling helper, you can find a keyword even if you are unsure how it is spelled. You can search on parts of keywords. It is also possible to search for multi-word expressions, for example throw in the towel ('give up'). From links in the dictionary articles, you can also navigate the dictionary and get from one article to another. Finally, you can hear how the search words are pronounced, if you are connected to the Internet.
The app is developed by Wang.se in collaboration with the dictionary editors at the Department of Swedish Language, University of Gothenburg. The spelling help is based on algorithms from Oribi AB.
