The puzzle consists of a square tray, typically a 4x4 grid, which contains 15 square tiles numbered from 1 to 15. The grid has one vacant space (the 16th position), which allows the adjacent tiles to be moved, or "slid," into the empty position.
The goal of the game is to arrange the tiles from a random starting configuration into numerical order, usually from left to right and top to bottom, with the numbers 1 through 15 in sequence, and the empty space in the bottom-right corner.
A player moves the tiles by sliding one of the pieces that is horizontally or vertically adjacent to the empty space into that empty slot. This changes the configuration of the numbers. The challenge lies in strategically manipulating the tiles, one move at a time, to achieve the final ordered state.
In addition to the original 4 x4 variant, there are also 5x5 and 6 x6 variants.
To make the game more difficult, you can also play with hidden numbers, which only appear when they are in the correct position
