Tarzan of the Apes is the first in a series of novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs about the fictional character Tarzan. This story was first published in pulp All Story Magazine in October 19121 and first edited as a book in 1914.

The story begins in 1888, with the mission that the British crown entrusts to John Clayton, Lord Greystoke: to visit the African village of Freetown in Sierra Leone and solve the problems with the native inhabitants. Clayton decides to travel with his pregnant wife, Alice Rutherford, so that he can see the birth of their son.

Three months after being abandoned, Alice gives birth to a boy, who they call John. However Alice is left with mental problems after an attack by a gorilla. Within a year of the baby's birth, Alice dies in her sleep, and Clayton, depressed, tries to get on with his son. But he dies from the attack of Kerchak, leader of the monkeys.

Guided by the baby's crying, the ape heads for the crib, but Kala, following her maternal instinct, runs to the crib, and takes the baby, protecting him from Kerchak, and adopting him as her son under the name of Tarzan, which means "white skin" in the language of the Mangani.

During his childhood and later adolescence, Tarzan learned to make ropes and use them as a rope to catch prey and stop predators. By the time he is 20 years old, Tarzan is already fully aware that he is a man, and dreams of knowing the world of humans. His wish grows bigger after meeting young Jane Porter, who is stranded on the beach in the middle of her father's expedition.
