About this app

Plan a day's sail in minutes — and take the plan with you on the water.
NO SUBSCRIPTION - one off lifetime purchase.

Solent Passage Planner helps you plan and sail coastal passages. Build a route from a database of real navigation marks, tune each leg for boat speed and tidal stream, and the app works out the course to steer, speed over the ground, distance, timings and ETA for every leg. Then follow your progress live on an OpenSeaMap chart.

PLAN IN MINUTES
Tap marks to string together a route, or long-press anywhere on the chart to drop a waypoint. Set your departure time and each leg's boat speed, then enter the tidal stream for a leg — its set and rate — and the app solves the tidal triangle for you: course to steer (°M), speed over the ground and leg time. Distances, times and ETAs update instantly as you edit. Save any number of plans and reload them later.

SAIL THE PLAN
Tap GPS and the boat symbol follows your real position on the chart, with the screen kept awake while you're under way. The instrument card always shows the next mark with course to steer (CTS), distance to go (DTG), speed over ground (SOG) and ETA — tap the course tile to switch between CTS, bearing to the mark (BRG) and course over ground (COG). An amber vector ahead of the boat shows the course you're actually making good, growing with your speed, and a dotted trail shows where you've been.

CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE
The Sail button runs an accelerated simulation along your route — a quick way to sanity-check a plan before leaving the mooring.

A PROPER CHART
Your route is drawn over OpenStreetMap with the OpenSeaMap seamark overlay: buoyage, lights and beacons on a clear, familiar chart. Numbered pins run between the green start and red finish marks. Night mode darkens the whole app for the cockpit after sunset. While under way the chart follows the boat — drag away for a look around and it snaps back after a few seconds.

YOUR MARKS, YOUR DATABASES
The app includes a Solent database of navigation marks. Edit any mark, add your own, or create separate databases for other areas. Additional coverage areas are available as one-time in-app purchases and download straight into the app.

MADE FOR REAL NAVIGATION HABITS
Courses to steer and bearings are shown in degrees magnetic with variation applied automatically for your position; tracks and tidal set remain in degrees true, just as you'd work them on a chart.

IMPORTANT
This app is an aid to passage planning and situational awareness only. It must not be used as the sole means of navigation. Positions, marks and calculated data may be incomplete, out of date or incorrect. Always use official, up-to-date charts and publications, maintain a proper lookout, and apply good seamanship. You are responsible for the safety of your vessel and crew.
