About this app

The UK Immigration: ID Check app lets you confirm your identity online as part of a visa application.

If you use this app, you will not have to attend an appointment to confirm your identity.

Who can use the app
• EU, European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss citizens
• British national (overseas) visa (BNO) applicants who have a BNO or Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport
• Graduate visa applicants who have a UK biometric residence permit (BRP)

Before you start

You must follow the steps in the online application form before using the app.

You will need to be in a well-lit area, so you can take a good quality photo of yourself.

You will need either:
• a biometric residence permit (BRP) - if you’re applying for a graduate visa and are not from the EU, European Economic Area (EEA) or a Swiss citizen, you must use a BRP
• a passport that has a chip (also called a ‘biometric passport’)

How it works

1. Take a photo of your identity document.
2. Access the chip in your identity document using your phone.
3. Scan your face using the camera on your phone.
4. Take a photo of yourself for your digital status.

What happens next

The app only helps confirm your identity. You must still complete the rest of your application. We will tell you how to do this when you finish using the app.

Privacy and security

The app is safe and secure. Your personal information will not be stored in the app or on the phone when you finish using it.

We recommend you use this app on Android 10 or above. For information on staying safe online please visit the UK Cyber Aware website.

The App is difficult to follow. It does not save all information you provided and get different codes for each section and not saving. Meaning submitted 90% of required information if you come out or get timed out because you have to go outside to add something else, you lose all and have to start over again. It's taken me more than an hour and get to where I take a photo. It didn't save and as I was directed to another page all disappeared. I rate the App 0 at the moment. Not fit for purpose

I actually had a very easy experience using this app on my Android phone. I did have to make sure NFC was turned on and that I'd taken off my case to scan my BRP, but the whole thing was done in 5 minutes. Considering I once had to fly back to my home country to do the same process (thanks UKVI, 😅), this was a thousand times easier. Just make sure your lighting is good, your connection is strong, and that everything is updated before starting.

Great potential but honestly the UX on this app drove me crazy. It has several stages to go through and an error at any stage just resets all your progress. NFC is a delicate process, which may fail often. I failed the NFC several times and could not retry, having to fill in my info again and again. More importantly, the last stage where you scan your face has several requirements that aren't mentioned before starting. You reach this stage and realize you can't take a photo in the evening.
