Walnet connects your phones, and the people you invite, directly.
Calls, messages, voice notes, photos and files travel device to device over encrypted WebRTC connections. Our server introduces devices to each other and never sees what you say or send. No ads, no trackers.
No sign-up
No email, no phone number, no password. Walnet creates a random identity on your phone, and you choose the name others see.
What you can do
- Voice and video calls, one to one or in a group
- High-fidelity stereo audio and adjustable video quality
- Chat one to one or in groups, with delivered and read receipts
- Message someone who is offline: it is delivered once you are both online
- Hold-to-talk voice messages
- Send photos, videos and large files; transfers pick up where they left off if the connection drops
- Share from other apps straight into a chat
- Invite people with a link or a QR code
- Profile pictures, and block anyone you do not want to hear from
- Bluetooth headsets
Intercom mode
Use a spare phone as an intercom. Choose which contacts it answers automatically and leave it in a room with Walnet on screen. Off by default, and calls are answered automatically only while Walnet is open on that phone's screen.
How it works
- Full mesh, no SFU. In a group call every phone holds its own connection to every other phone. No media server sits in the middle, so nothing between you can decrypt your audio or video.
- Encryption is negotiated between the phones: DTLS-SRTP for audio and video, SCTP over DTLS for chat and files. The keys never leave the device.
- The signaling server relays connection offers and network candidates over a secure WebSocket, keeps room membership, and sends wake-up pushes that carry no message content.
- When no direct path exists, a TURN relay forwards the still-encrypted packets. Its credentials are short-lived (HMAC, 24 hours) and issued per user.
- A client-side reconciler keeps every connection healthy.
- Group messages go to each member over their own connection. There is no server-side fan-out and no message store.
- Files travel in chunks on a dedicated data channel, so a dropped transfer resumes where it stopped instead of starting over.
- Usernames and profile pictures are exchanged directly between phones and never stored on the server.
Limits, honestly
- Mesh suits small groups: each phone uploads its own stream to everyone else, so upload grows with every person you add.
- Phones check each other's keys through fingerprints that the signaling server passes along. There is no safety-number check yet.
- As with any direct connection, the people you connect to can see your IP address.
Network Paths
A map of where your connections actually go: the server, the relay and each person you are connected to, placed by network address.
