Yo Bro is a practice app for school, made for one boy and then finished properly: words, reading, grammar and maths in one app, with no account.

Getting a list in
• Photograph the sheet from school. The scanner straightens it, reads the words on the phone, works out which column is which, and shows you what it read so you can fix its mistakes.
• Or type one in, import a CSV, or scan a friend's list off their screen: a whole list fits in a QR code.

Eight ways to practise: typing, practice test, multiple choice, learn, spelling, hints, dictation and flashcards. The marking does not punish the wrong things: a missing article or accent still counts, and is pointed out; one typo is ‘almost’.

A few minutes a day, so it sticks. Every word comes back after a day, then three, a week, a fortnight and five weeks, and straight back to the start when you get it wrong. The Today card gathers what is due; set the test date and those words come first.

Reading. A course for children starting to read: a few new letters a lesson, a short story with pictures that the phone reads aloud, and questions about it. All of it free.

Verbs. 150 verbs in every tense school teaches, as tables and in real sentences: paths of lessons in four tenses, a test with a mark, and more ways to practise, from spotting the mistake to listening and writing what is missing.

Spelling and vocabulary. Practise the spelling school tests, such as there, their and they're, and learn school words and what they mean.

Maths, and all of it free. Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, negative numbers and basic algebra, in thirty-three chapters. Each chapter starts with an explanation and a drawing that shows why the method works; then practice, where a hint gives the next step rather than the answer; then a test. A wrong answer gets the reason it was wrong.

Sums as well. Plus, minus, times and divided by, with the missing number anywhere, in four levels, and the times tables from 1 to 12.

Pictures. 354 drawings in fourteen sets, and seven ways of asking, from choosing the word to filling in the missing sound.

Battle, in the same room. One phone shows a code, the others scan it and play along. Players are animals rather than names. Up to 32 of you, and no server: nothing leaves the room.

246 badges, drawn by hand, all kept on the phone.

Print it. Word lists, Friday's test, worksheets, lesson sheets with their answers and board games, each with a code to scan it back in.

Made to be read. Light or dark, and a font for children with dyslexia (OpenDyslexic) at the flick of a switch. The app speaks seventeen languages and reads the words aloud.

No account. No advertising. No tracking. Free: three lists, three ways of practising, the first level of every sum, three sets of pictures, the whole reading course, the first lessons of verbs, spelling and vocabulary, and the whole of maths. Yo Bro Pro unlocks the rest, by the year or by the month, and ends whenever you cancel it. Joining someone else's battle is always free.
