Traveler's edema is swelling of the feet resulting from remaining motionless in a seated position for several hours, most often during travel by plane, train, or car.Under normal circumstances, the efficient transport of blood from the lower limbs to the heart relies primarily on the muscle pump system in the lower leg, which moves blood from the feet to the heart through the repetitive compression of lower-leg veins caused by calf muscle contractions.
Activating this system during travel—when we otherwise remain motionless for extended periods—helps prevent traveler's edema.
Seated position
Calf muscles relaxed,lower-leg vein valves open, blood does not return to the heart,non-circulating blood volume causes foot swelling after several hours.
Activation of the calf muscle pump system
Step one: calf muscles contracted
Compression of lower-leg veins by the calf muscles forces blood outthrough the open upper venous valve, the lower valve remains closed due to the pressure of blood in the compressed vein, preventing the expelled blood from flowing backward, the volume of blood expelled from the lower-leg veins returns to the heart.
Step two: calf muscles relaxed
The upper valve remains closed due to the blood previously expelled from the lower-leg veins, preventing backflow, the lower valve opens, allowing a new volume of blood to flow into the lower-leg veins.
Subsequent contraction of the lower-leg muscles forces another volume of blood from the lower-leg veins toward the heart.
Calf Muscle Pump in action
Activation of the calf muscle pump:Discreet and more effective isometric contraction of the calf muscles.
Activation of the calf muscle pump:
Less discreet and less effective calf muscle contraction
triggered by alternately lifting and lowering the foot.
Warning:
Remaining seated and motionless for an extended periodincreases the risk of deep vein thrombosis. The development of painful calf swelling requires urgent medical attention.
