The future is built on your choices.

In the 2300s, a scientist receives a time machine from their own future self. Its purpose seems clear: intervene at turning points in history and shape a better tomorrow. But every change leaves consequences, and a brighter future can carry a darker cost.

The Janus Engine is a single-player interactive story with strategic resource management. Explore historical eras, choose which fractures in time to investigate, and decide what deserves to change.

CHOOSE WHAT HISTORY BECOMES
Encounter dilemmas inspired by real historical events, from ancient civilizations to the modern world. Preserve a course of history or intervene, then discover how your decisions echo through later centuries.

BALANCE PROGRESS AND CONSEQUENCES
Manage Resolve while weighing the stability of the future against the burden of your interventions. You cannot follow every path, and choosing one opportunity can close another.

FOLLOW THE RIPPLES
Read original and altered timeline records. Discover how an intervention affects lives, institutions, and the world your scientist calls home.

RETURN TO THE BEGINNING
Progress through repeated timelines, uncover new possibilities, and watch the Engine’s atmosphere change as the loops accumulate.

PLAY AT YOUR OWN PACE
Automatic saving preserves your progress. Atmospheric artwork, music, and sound accompany a reading-focused experience built around difficult decisions.

The Janus Engine blends historical inspiration with speculative fiction. Its alternate outcomes are imagined possibilities, not factual accounts of what would have happened.

Some stories reference war, oppression, illness, and other serious historical themes.
