Treadmill Smart Speed turns your Android phone into a Bluetooth running sensor. Apps and watches that read a foot pod see your treadmill's speed and incline, so your indoor runs count. It works with Zwift, and with other apps and devices that read a standard Bluetooth running speed sensor.

No pod to clip to your shoe, nothing to charge, no extra hardware. Stand the phone on the treadmill's console and run.

Two ways to set the speed

• Treadmill buttons: set the speed on screen to match the treadmill's console. It moves in steps of 0.1, holding a button speeds it up, and six presets are a tap away mid-stride. Hold a preset to save the speed you are running at. This works with any treadmill or walking pad, however basic.
• Bluetooth treadmill: if your treadmill or walking pad already talks Bluetooth (FTMS, or an iConsole+ console), the app reads its own speed and incline and passes them on for you. It only reads: it never changes the treadmill's speed or incline.

What it sends

• Speed, as a standard Bluetooth running speed sensor
• Incline, in whole per cent, as a fitness machine treadmill, for apps that use it
• On screen, km/h or mph, with your pace per kilometre or per mile

Made to be read mid-run

The speed fills the screen, big enough to read at arm's length, and every control sits where your thumb can reach it. The screen stays on while the app is open, and the app keeps broadcasting with the screen off or another app in front. Its notification shows it is running, and its Stop button ends the run.

Just Run

No app to send the speed to? Choose Just Run at the bottom of the speed source list, and the phone records the run on its own. Set the speed to match the treadmill's console and run through a 3D park, as a man or a woman. Every kilometre or mile has a gate: run through it for your split, a tap and a burst of confetti. Each run is kept on the phone with its time, distance and pace. Match the distance to the treadmill's display afterwards, and export the run as a TCX file to share or save. The last 50 runs are kept, and you can delete any of them.

Pairing

Start pairing in your app and choose the run speed sensor. The phone appears under its own Bluetooth name, and the app shows you which name to look for. The light at the top turns green once an app is receiving your speed.

Garmin watches can use the phone as a foot pod too, with three steps first: pair the watch with this phone, restart the watch once after pairing, and turn off the watch's phone connection for the run. The app's help explains each one.

Try it free

Every feature is free for a 10-minute run, counted only while an app is connected or a Just Run run is recording. When the time is up, the speed sent drops to zero and a run being recorded is saved where it ended. The next free run starts an hour after the last one ended. One in-app purchase unlocks it for good. No subscription.

No account, no adverts

There is no sign-in and nothing to set up. There are no adverts and no analytics. Your speed and incline go over Bluetooth to the device you pair with, Just Run's runs stay on the phone unless you export one, and the one purchase is handled by Google Play.

The app asks for Nearby devices, to broadcast and to find a Bluetooth treadmill, and for notifications, to show that it is running. It needs Android 14 or later and a phone whose Bluetooth can act as a sensor; the app tells you if yours cannot.
