Most calorie apps get their numbers from their users. Search "rice" and you'll find forty entries, all a little different, with no way of telling which one somebody copied off a bag and which one they made up.

Macro Tracker gets its numbers from the national food tables that governments publish and dietitians use. There are fifteen in the app: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Yours comes first, in your language, and every result tells you which table it came from. If a table doesn't list something, the app says it doesn't know rather than pretending it's zero.

I built it because I live on the Spanish coast, where plenty of the shops stock food for Scandinavians, and no calorie app I tried could cope with English on the phone and Norwegian on the label. It's free, and it's staying that way.

Half a million packaged products from Open Food Facts come with it, so the barcode scanner works in the shop even when the signal doesn't. The whole database lives on your phone.

The diary is quick. The top of the screen tells you what's left for the day, and each meal has its own + button. You can copy yesterday's breakfast in one tap, swipe an entry away to delete it, and undo when you change your mind. Log by weight, by volume or by the portion a food comes in. Set your own targets or have them estimated, add your own foods, look back over a week or four, and export everything as a spreadsheet.

It works with the largest text size and with TalkBack, in light and dark, and in eleven languages: English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

There's no account, no ads, no subscription and no paid version, and there won't be one. Your diary stays on your phone and I never see it. The barcode scanner reads codes on the phone and sends nothing anywhere. Google Play may collect crash reports, as it does for every app it distributes. Two optional Open Food Facts features use the internet, and both are off until you turn them on. The full policy: https://macros.lethio.com/#privacy
