Doorman is a notification manager. It shows you which apps' notifications you actually open, and lets you hold the rest back until you are ready for them.

YOUR SIGNAL RATE

When a notification arrives, you open it, you swipe it away, or you leave it. Doorman records which, app by app, and turns it into a single number — your signal rate, the share of an app's notifications you actually opened.

An app that interrupted you 87 times and was opened 4 of those times has a signal rate of 4.6%. An app you open almost every time is earning its place on your phone. Until now there was no way to tell those two apart, because every app's notifications look equally urgent in the moment.

The free version includes all of it:

• Signal rate for every app that has sent you a notification
• A ranking by unopened interruptions, so the worst offender is obvious
• An hour-by-hour view of when the interruptions actually land
• A weekly summary of what your notifications cost you

THE DOORMAN

A diagnosis on its own does not fix anything. Turn batching on for the apps that scored worst, and Doorman holds their notifications back, then delivers them together as a single digest on a schedule you choose, from every 15 minutes to every 8 hours.

Tapping a held notification opens what the original would have opened. If Android has closed Doorman since, it opens the app instead, and the row says so. Nothing is lost and nothing is dismissed on your behalf — the notification simply arrives on your schedule instead of the app's.

Batching is the paid half of Doorman. Switching an app off and getting back anything held are always free.

WHAT ALWAYS GETS THROUGH

Batching is never applied to anything urgent. Doorman checks every notification before it holds it, and delivers immediately, every time:

• Verification codes and one-time passwords
• Calls, alarms, direct messages, calendar events and reminders
• Anything the sending app marked as high priority
• Ongoing notifications, such as a call in progress or a running timer
• Notifications from your dialer and your messaging app

This is not a preference and it cannot be switched off. A batching app that delays a login code is a broken batching app.

NOTIFICATION ACCESS, AND WHY DOORMAN ASKS FOR IT

Doorman uses Android's notification access permission (NotificationListenerService). This is core functionality, not an optional extra: it is the only way Android lets an app know that a notification arrived and what happened to it afterwards. Without this permission there is no notification log, no signal rate and no digest, and Doorman cannot do anything at all.

You grant the permission yourself in Android settings, after Doorman explains what it is for, and you can revoke it in the same place at any time.

YOUR NOTIFICATIONS STAY ON YOUR PHONE

Doorman stores metadata, not contents: which app posted a notification, when it arrived, the category and priority the app gave it, and how it was removed. Notification titles and message text are not stored.

The single exception is an app you personally switch batching on for. Doorman has to keep that app's notification text in order to show it to you in the digest, and deletes it within 24 hours of the digest being delivered.

There is no account and no sign-in. Your notification data is never uploaded to a server, never sold and never shared with anyone. Every statistic you see is calculated on your own device.

The only network requests are a RevenueCat check on whether you have paid, and OneSignal if you turn on Doorman's own notifications. Neither carries notification data.

Doorman does not use accessibility services, and it cannot see the list of apps installed on your phone — it only ever learns about an app once that app has sent you a notification.

Requires Android 8.0 or later, because earlier versions do not report whether a notification was opened or dismissed.
