Learn to recognise music by playing it, not by tapping multiple-choice buttons.

Chromatic plays something. You answer on your own instrument. That's it. No cables, no audio interface, no extra hardware. The mic hears you, whether you're on piano, guitar, bass, any other instrument or even singing. Prefer a MIDI keyboard? Plug one in. No instrument to hand? There's an on-screen keyboard too.

Put your phone on your music stand and you never have to touch it again. Control the exercise and the daily routine by playing assigned notes on your instrument. Practise your whole session without breaking flow.

Why answering on your instrument matters

Recognising an interval in a quiz is one skill. Finding it under your fingers is another, and that's the one that lets you play along. Chromatic trains both at once, so the goal isn't just to recognise what your fellow musicians are playing. It's to join in.

Start from zero, or go deep

New learner? The Journey course begins with sound rather than theory. You learn to hear the colours in music that even non-musicians can recognise, then attach the names and theory to what you already hear. Recognise first, identify second, expand from there. Seventeen chapters take you from major and minor triads to diatonic progressions and melodies from any scale. No prior knowledge required.

Already a musician? Skip the course. Six exercise types: intervals, chords, progressions, diatonic harmony, melodies, and your own MIDI files. Each is tunable down to the scale, the inversions, the range, the tempo... Save specific configurations as presets and chain them into routines, or bring in a MIDI file to practise your favourite solos.

Chromatic focuses on contextual learning rather than isolated questions. Interval exercises can be configured to play a chord and a target note, so you learn the sound as degrees instead of abstract distances.

Built around how your instrument actually works

Keyboard players can answer with both hands, developing them together rather than leaving chords to the left and melodies to the right.

Guitarists and bassists can play chords the way they really voice them, full strums and doubled notes included, and can swap the staff for tablature.

Singers get note detection tuned for the voice. You don't need perfect intonation for an answer to register.
