Learn a language by reading one short story a day.

3 to 5 minutes, written for your level. No drills, no games, no streaks — just calm, consistent reading that actually builds a language.

Topic Today is a language learning app built around daily reading. Short stories at your exact level, without the pressure of lessons, drills, or gamified apps. Pick a language, pick your level, open the app, read. That's the whole thing.

Six languages. Every CEFR level.

Learn Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Romanian, Swedish, or English — for a trip, for work, because you moved, to reconnect with family, or just because you love the sound of it. Every story is tuned to your CEFR level — A1 (beginner), A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2 (advanced) — so you understand around 95% of the words and pick up the rest from context. That 95% mark is where language researchers say acquisition actually happens.

Why reading works for language learning

Reading builds vocabulary, grammar intuition, and comprehension in context — the way you learned your first language. Topic Today is built on comprehensible input: content you mostly understand, with just enough new material to keep growing. Your brain fills in the rest.

Decades of extensive reading research (Nakanishi, 2015; Schmitt, Jiang & Grabe, 2011; Suk, 2017) show that reading level-appropriate material daily improves vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency more effectively than drilling or flashcards alone. The only real catch is consistency. Three minutes a day, every day, beats one long study session once a week.

Who Topic Today is for

- Language learners who want a daily reading habit
- People studying a language alongside a course, class, or private tutor
- Intermediate learners stuck on a plateau who need real content at their level
- Beginners looking for short, readable stories in a new language
- Advanced learners wanting to maintain and deepen a language they already know
- Learners preparing for a CEFR exam through extensive reading practice
- Anyone tired of streaks, XP, leaderboards, and gamified language apps

Topic Today is not a full language course. It's a daily reading habit that sits alongside whatever else you're doing — a quiet companion, not another app fighting for your attention.

Philosophy

Understanding over memorization.
Consistency over intensity.
