Record birdsong. Clean up field recordings. Hear every detail.

TalonFab Recorder and Editor is a free, focused audio studio for birders, naturalists and sound recordists. Record calls with your phone or an external microphone, or open audio you already have and clean it up for listening, study and identification.

Everything runs on your device. There are no ads, accounts, uploads or tracking.

Record with the right microphone

• Capture quick observations with your phone's built-in microphone, or select a compatible wired or USB microphone.
• Choose the input device, sample rate up to 384 kHz, and 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float capture where your hardware supports it.
• Monitor a processed signal while tracking a bird. Apply a low-cut filter to reduce wind rumble and parabolic-microphone compensation for more natural monitoring.
• Monitoring filters affect only what you hear. Your recording is always saved clean and unprocessed.
• Keep recording with the screen locked or while using another app, with recording status shown on the lock screen.
• Use red night mode before dawn to check levels without ruining your night vision.

Open and clean up existing recordings

• Import WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, OGG or AAC audio from a handheld recorder, parabolic rig, another app or another recordist.
• Open files directly, send them to TalonFab with “Open with…” or the share sheet, or drag and drop them on desktop.
• Reduce wind, hiss and background noise so faint or messy calls are easier to hear and study.
• Use the same editing, noise reduction and reel-export tools whether the audio was recorded in TalonFab or imported.
• Edit high-resolution audio up to 384 kHz and 32-bit float.

Compare several calls

• Keep multiple recordings open in tabs—ideal for comparing captures and reference calls in one workspace.
• Switch between calls with a tap, then close individual tabs or clear the set when you are finished.
• Every tab keeps its own crop, filters, processing and playback state as you move between recordings.

See exactly what you are hearing

• Explore real-time spectrogram, waveform and frequency-spectrum views with one synchronised playhead.
• Adjust the minimum displayed frequency to focus on the band where the bird is calling.
• Switch between the original input and processed output at any time.

Edit with precision

• Crop tightly around a call using the spectrogram or waveform as your guide.
• Use on-device AI noise reduction (beta) to lift bird calls out of distracting background sound. Audio is processed locally and never uploaded.
• Remove rumble with a low-cut filter, tame hiss with a high-cut filter, and target steady tones such as hum or insect whine with notch filters.
• Apply compensation designed for TalonFab 300 and 580 parabolic microphones, with adjustable aim correction.
• Finish with non-destructive normalisation and output gain while preserving the original recording.

Export and share

• Export WAV in 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float; lossless FLAC in 16-bit or 24-bit; or MP3.
• Create a vertical reel video with a spectrogram, waveform and moving playhead.
• Save the reel to your device or share it through Android to compatible apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Private by design

TalonFab works fully offline. Your recordings stay on your device, and your edits are non-destructive. There are no ads, subscriptions, sign-up screens or tracking.

Whether you are identifying a faint call, comparing reference recordings, capturing a dawn chorus or sharing a rare find, TalonFab Recorder and Editor gives you a fast, private way to record, clean up, study and share birdsong.
