ABCBraille turns a photo of a braille page into readable text, on your device.

Point your camera at a braille document, or load a photo from your gallery. The app detects each braille cell and translates the result using liblouis (the open-source braille translation library used by accessibility software worldwide). The text appears alongside the original braille rows, line for line.

If the recognition gets a cell wrong, tap it. A precise editor opens with the cell zoomed in and a 2×3 dot keypad mirroring braille's physical layout. Toggle the dots that should be raised, see the word update in real time, then move to the next cell — or jump straight to the next line. Corrections re-translate the line automatically.

Saved sessions live on your phone. Open one to view the result later, share the original photo + translated text + an annotated image via the system share sheet, rename it, or re-open it later to keep editing.

— Why it's different —

• ALL ON-DEVICE. The braille recognition model and liblouis run locally. Your photos, recognised text, and any corrections never leave your phone unless you explicitly tap Share.

• NO ACCOUNT, NO SIGN-IN, NO ADS. Open the app, scan, get text. That's it.

• CELL-LEVEL CORRECTION. Most braille scanners give you a single block of text and an OCR-style "edit the text" field. ABCBraille lets you fix individual cells — the model output stays connected to the photo so every correction is precise.

• RE-OPEN AND KEEP EDITING. Saved sessions retain the per-cell data, so you can come back later and resume corrections.

— Who it's for —

• Teachers and transcribers checking student work or proofing braille embossing.
• Parents and caregivers reading braille materials produced for their child.
• Blind and visually impaired users wanting an on-device way to read printed braille.
• Researchers and accessibility professionals processing braille documents.

— What's supported —

• English Unified English Braille (UEB) Grade 2 (default).
• Contracted and uncontracted braille translation via liblouis.
• Photos of raised-dot braille on paper. Best results: even lighting, page held flat, dots casting a small shadow.

— Open source attribution —

ABCBraille uses liblouis (https://liblouis.io), distributed under LGPL-2.1-or-later. The full license text is bundled inside the app (Settings → About → View LGPL-2.1 license) and a link to the upstream source is provided.

— Privacy —

ABCBraille does not collect, share, or transmit your data. All processing — image recognition, braille translation, saving — happens on your device. The only network access is when you tap a "Share" button to hand a file to another app you chose. Full privacy policy: https://abcbraille.com/privacy

— Feedback —

This is the early beta. We're building the app with teachers, transcribers, and braille readers — your feedback shapes what we build next. Reach the developer at hello@abcbraille.com.
