How to farm resources in Clash of Clans

If you want to keep making steady progress in Clash of Clans, you’ll need to invest time in collecting resources. From the most common resources like Gold and Elixir to the more specific Raid Medals and Capital Gold, we’ve put together this guide to help you learn which resources are used for what purposes, and how to most effectively farm each of them.

1. Gold

Gold is one of the most common currencies in Clash of Clans. Gold collected through Gold Mines is subsequently stored in Gold storages; you can also earn gold through the single-player campaign, raiding other players, Clan Wars, Practice mode, special events, achievements, and more.
Some of the most efficient ways to farm Gold are to complete the goblin maps in Single Player, joining a Clan to participate in Clan Wars, and collecting rewards from your Treasury by earning Star Bonuses. This versatile currency is used to build and upgrade traps, walls, defenses, mines, collectors, and for various other purposes, making it useful to have on hand.

2. Elixir

Elixir can be brewed using Elixir Collectors at your base, then stored in Elixir Storages. It’s certainly an important resource to have on hand as it allows you to build and upgrade buildings, purchase decorations, upgrade your walls, upgrade your troops, and much more.
Farming Elixir can be done a number of ways – other than targeting your opponents’ Elixir Storages and Collectors in multiplayer battles, you’ll want to make sure you’re upgrading your own Collectors to their max levels to boost Elixir production. Similar to Gold, you can also get Elixir by clearing the Single Player goblin maps, fighting in Clan Wars, and Star Bonuses.

3. Dark Elixir

Dark Elixir is similar to Elixir, but is mined by Dark Elixir Drills and stored in Dark Elixir Storages. It’s a rarer resource that isn’t unlocked until you reach Town Hall Level 7.
Use Dark Elixir to upgrade your Heroes, Dark Spells, and Dark Elixir troops. To farm Dark Elixir productively, you’ll need to experiment with your raiding strategy. For example, you can try using Sneaky Goblins (unlocked at Town Hall 11) with Invisibility and Jump Spells to loot Dark Elixir from other bases – it’s incredibly effective. Or, you can save your Dark Elixir from Clan Wars and Star Bonuses in your treasury, and collect it when you’re ready to make an upgrade.

4. Gems

Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans; you’ll start your journey with 250 Gems once the tutorial is completed. Additional Gems can be purchased via the Premium Shop, or farmed by completing achievements.
You’ll also earn Gems throughout your time progressing in the game, like when you’re clearing obstacles and collecting regularly from your Gem Mines. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have extra magic items, like Potions and Rings, they can be sold in exchange for Gems, so be sure to participate in Raid Weekends to earn those Raid Medals.

5. Builder Gold & Builder Elixir

Builder Gold is slightly different from regular Gold, as you’ll only generate it via the Gold Mines in the Builder Base. If you’ve yet to come across Builder Base, don’t worry – you’ll unlock the separate game mode once you reach Town Hall Level 4 and repair the Boat located on the Village shore. You can also get Builder Gold through season challenges and Versus Battles.
Similar to Builder Gold, Builder Elixir can only be collected in Builder Base. It’s relatively easy to farm by pulling off consecutive 3-star Versus Battles. You can even start an attack and immediately surrender, allowing another player to quickly attack your Village while you earn Builder Elixir for defending. Just be wary that this quick strategy will only get you Builder Elixir and that you’ll be neglecting to earn Gold.

6. Capital Gold

Once your clan reaches Level 2, it’ll unlock Clan Capital mode. Players with a minimum Town Hall Level 6 can participate in repairing and upgrading the Clan Capital using Capital Gold.
There are a couple of different avenues for earning Capital Gold: you can collect it by participating in season challenges or craft it using the Forge in your Home Village. It’s also part of the loot you get from participating in Raid Weekends, the Clan Capital’s primary battle mode.

7. Raid Medals

Raid medals are earned during Raid Weekends, one of the battle modes featured in the Clan Capital. A clan’s Capital Hall must reach minimum Level 2 to unlock Raid Weekends. Once the Raid Weekend is over, your Clan’s performance will be assessed based on how successfully you led raids against other Clan Capitals, along with how well you defended your own.
You can spend the Raid Medals you earn on purchasing magic items from the Trader, or to supply your Clan Castle with additional troops.
