All the different mission types in Honkai: Star Rail

The story of Honkai: Star Rail is told through missions that will take you across the galaxy. There are several different types of missions in the game, with some advancing the overall plot and dishing out great rewards, and others providing momentary distractions and a few items you might need to progress. Here are all the mission types in Honkai: Star Rail and what you need to know about them.

Trailblaze missions

The missions you'll focus on the most as you work through Honkai: Star Rail are Trailblaze missions. These take you through the game's main story. There are a whole lot of these, and they're a great way to earn Trailblaze Levels to unlock new features and activities within the game. They also offer a variety of rewards, including leveling materials and new characters.

Trailblaze Continuance missions

After working through the Trailblaze missions on a planet, the plot might take you to new locales. But often, you can do more with the stories and characters you've left behind. Trailblaze Continuance missions unlock after you complete the Trailblaze missions in a given location and allow you to continue those stories. Like Trailblaze missions, they provide a variety of useful rewards.

Adventure missions

Adventure missions are smaller-scale side quests you can pick up in different locations, or from limited-time events. These usually come from NPCs standing around in common areas like markets; you'll know they have a mission for you because of the exclamation point marking them on your minimap.
Adventure missions are usually a little quicker and easier to complete than other missions. They help raise your Trailblaze Level and to grab other rewards. Other than those that are only available for a limited time, you might want to save these for when you need to increase your Trailblaze Level to continue with the main story.

Companion missions

Characters are a huge part of Honkai: Star Rail, and all the people you'll recruit to your team as you play through the game have compelling backstories and arcs of their own. Companion missions let you play through stories that are specific to a given playable character.
These will come up as you play, often through answering text messages from different members of the Astral Express crew, so keep an eye on your notifications. Completing Companion missions can lead to the involved characters showing up on the Astral Express as visitors, where you can talk to them and receive Stellar Jade.

Fate's Atlas

This last one isn't a type of mission so much as a tracking system for them. Fate's Atlas provides you with a timeline that includes all the Trailblaze missions you've completed, as well as any Adventure or Companion missions that you've done or which are still available.
Fate's Atlas can be helpful to make sure you're not missing any missions you might have wanted to complete, and lets you see where those missions fall in the overall story to help you keep better track of Honkai: Star Rail's narrative. You can also tap on a mission listed in Fate's Atlas to access it immediately and teleport to its start point.
