Starter guide for Free Fire's Kalahari map

Free Fire's battle royale is all about collecting loot and surviving until the end and the maps are integral to making the experience happen. Each map offers multiple locations, with stashes of hidden loot, obstacles to overcome and more. Knowing what to expect as soon as you drop in will help you win in the long run.
Here, you'll learn everything you need to know about Kalahari, Free Fire's desert-based map. We will cover the best locations to land – whether you're itching for a fight or wish to land quietly – along with a few key strategies that will help you win the day.

All about Kalahari

Kalahari is a sprawling desert with 13 sections, spread out evenly across the map. This is a desert, however, so the areas between each location are wide open and don't offer a lot in terms of cover should you run into an opponent.
One of the locations you should keep in mind is Refinery. Its central location makes it important for every match in Kalahari based on where the safe zone leads. Other than that, be wary of the small waterbeds on the northern side of the map, as they could slow you down as you dash to a northern-based safe zone.

Kalahari hot spots

Kalahari sports over a dozen named locations, each with their own features and hidden loot stashes. Some are busier than others, due to both their location on the map and the quality of loot. If you like being in the heat of the action from the start, here are three places you should check out first:
  • Mammoth – it's a massive set of mammoth bones jutting out of the southwestern part of the map. The quality of loot in this creative area is impressive as well. Just keep the safe zone in mind if you land here, as it's pretty far from the map's centre.
  • Bayfront – Bayfront sits just to the northeast of Refinery, the busiest location on the map. It's a huge area lined with buildings stuffed with loot. As such, if you're looking for good loot but don't want to deal with the mayhem at Refinery, you should consider going to Bayfront.
  • Refinery – Refinery is the centre of the map and holds the best loot. These two things mean that you'll encounter an instant firefight in every match, so only land here if you're looking for a fight from the get-go or else you'll be heading back to the main menu quickly.

Low-key landing locations

If you want to start a battle royale match quietly, or prioritise stocking up over immediate engagement with other players, then the locations above might not cater to your needs. If you're looking for something a bit more low-key, give these three locations a try instead:
  • Old Hampton – this northwestern area is the farthest named location from the centre and, as such, doesn't see a ton of traffic in the early stages. If this is your first drop into Kalahari, Old Hampton is a great place to start.
  • Santa Catarina – this docked boat in the southeastern region of the map is connected to the rest of the map via a few small bridges. The area may be a little too risky to navigate early on but it's worth a try. Land inside the boat, plunder it, then make your move.
  • The Maze – this massive hedge maze can be a real headache if you land there unaware that it is, in fact, a giant maze. Use that info to your advantage and gather up all the loot you can while other players are busy elsewhere.

Best Kalahari strategies

The spectre of Refinery is going to loom over every battle royale match on Kalahari, and not just because of how busy it is to begin with. Its central location means most matches are likely to end there as well. Landing on a fringe location and slowly making your way into Refinery is a good idea, so long as you keep an eye out for players who may already have settled in.
Old Hampton is also a great place to land in your first few Kalahari matches, as it will give you a lay of the land and is far enough away from the centre to give you some breathing room. Also, if you want to be closer to Refinery and don't want to risk Bayfront, Command Post is another viable option.
