Data privacy and security

Data privacy and security

You can explore apps and games without worry, thanks to Play’s built-in protections and safety standards for developers. Read on to learn about how we keep your data safe, and also about the data practices of specific apps.

Protecting you from bad apps

Your device comes with a free, built-in security tool: Play Protect. Play Protect analyses potentially harmful apps before you download them, and Android regularly scans your apps for malware, prompting you to uninstall any bad apps.

Check apps’ data practices

Before you install an app, you can view details from the developer about how they handle your data.

To do so, go to the Data safety section on an app's details page, where you'll find a summary of its data safety practices. To learn more, tap 'See details'.

This way, you can make more informed decisions about what apps you use and download with confidence.
Tip
The info in the Data safety section only applies to apps distributed on Google Play. You’ll only find the Data safety section on Android 5 and up.
